2nd monthly meeting: Date & Time27th August 2022, 3pm   //   Venue: Picnic area beside Mata woods.

Attendees: Alan Rolle, Carlos Branquinho, Cynthia Back, Dave Meehan, Jan Rowe, Jean Claude, Lesley Branquinho, Lisa Sidor, Lucy Gable, Maria Fingleton, Marie Paule Auge, Nel Frederix.

Apologies: Annie Piggot, Erwin Deen, Kim L. Jensen

1. Welcome & Intros

• Dave invited everyone to briefly introduce themselves and their involvement in art. • During the intros, Carlos enquired about life drawing classes. Locations discussed were Alfeizerao, Atelier Vieira de Silva and Silos. If anyone knows of any upcoming classes, they were asked to forward to Dave for upload to blog. • Lisa enquired if the group could include artists from other artforms like jewellery.

2. Exhibitions

 • Lucy reported on her meeting with Nicola Henrique at Silos, a creative space run by Associação Destino de Caldas. Exhibition space is available for use, no rental fee but electricity costs must be paid for. It also has a space for workshops and a private bar. Lucy suggested that if we plan to hold an exhibition there, we should keep it of short duration but advertise well. • Maria emailed CCC and Momos and no reply was received. • Other locations/ideas proposed for exhibitions were a one-day exhibition in Parque Dom Carlos l, and in the glass ceiling space beside the park. It was suggested that we approach the Camara/Arts officer to enquire about public space usage. • Dave commented that artists who were looking for their own exhibitions could approach venues such as Citrus and Galeria café beside La Vie where he currently has one on. • Carlos mentioned venues in Obidos (gallery on main st.) which Lucy offered to follow up on.

3. Markets

• Cynthia gave feedback on the Bazar a Noite. Lucy advised about organiser’s vision for Bazar a Noite as an art expo rather than a market to sell products.

 • Jan suggested that we get a group banner for future stalls at the Bazar and other markets.

• Maria advised of upcoming second-hand market in Sao Martinho do Porto which also includes arts & crafts.

• Maria advised that Rex Bar market in Obidos would continue every Thursday in September @ 5pm with music. All artists and crafters welcome.

• Lucy visited Phabrik in Sierra d’El Rei which advertises a market twice a month but is mostly a private store. Parking is limited.

• Maria asked if anyone knew of festivals/ fairs in advance to advise so that we can apply to take part.

4. Artist Gallery      Maria gave a summary of Kim’s suggestion of having a shared gallery space run by member artists, and what it would entail. Lisa and Cynthia shared their personal experience of being part of a co-op. It was agreed that a member survey would be required to find out the level of interest in a co-op gallery or in an online gallery as proposed by Lucy, where members post their work on a group page (fb).

5. Member Participation     Dave called out areas where member participation is welcomed; Meeting Chair, Meeting Minutes, Exhibitions, Markets, Social media, Selling Online, Art Gallery, Online Gallery, Funding. A page was circulated, and attendees were asked to tick the areas they were interested in.

6. Other Ideas      Maria proposed that we ask artists to make a video of themselves/their art studio/workspace to be put on fb & Instagram. It was agreed that this would be put to the members as part of the survey followed up with a posting schedule of interested parties.

7. Other

• It was suggested that a quieter venue be chosen next time, and it was proposed to ask at Silos if we could use their space.

• It was suggested that another location or day (Sunday) might be chosen. This will be addressed in the survey.

• Dave will host an urban sketching afternoon on Saturday 10th September in Parque Dom Carlos l from 3 to 5pm.

Follow-up actions:

1. Follow up on email to CCC re Exhibition space - Maria.

2. Ask if we can have our meetings at Silos - Lucy.

3. Check out venues and talk to Camara in Obidos - Lucy.

4. Follow up on Momos re exhibitions - Jan.

5. Prepare survey (location, meetings, exhibitions, co-op/online gallery, videos) - Maria, Lucy, Jan.

6. Update blog with courses and other shared info - Dave.

Maria Fingleton. Date: 30/8/2022

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  1st meeting: Date & Time: 30th July 2022, 3pm.

Attendees: Annie Piggot, Bruce Birkett, Buds Athimoolam, Claudia Carlton Carman, Dave Gregory Denton, Dave Meehan, Domi Chodysz, Erwin Deen, Jan Rowe, Kim L. Jensen, Lucy Gable, Maria Fingleton, Nel Frederix.               Prepared by: Maria Fingleton __________________________________________________________________________________

1. Purpose & goals Dave Meehan introduced the group purpose and goals; to create a community of artists and like-minded people to network, share ideas, organise exhibitions, attend fairs and markets, provide support to each other.

2. Introductions Dave invited attendees to give a brief introduction of themselves and their involvement in art.

3. Exhibitions & markets

• Dave spoke of intention to have one exhibition per month in local cafes/venues with rotating artists as availability of venues and artists allows. It is envisaged that smaller groups will develop when we know what people are interested in - exhibition/market/fair etc.

 • Further discussion is required in relation to how the art is paid for/direct or through venue/commission or not/opening nights etc., as they will change according to venue.

• Dave noted the possibility of attending markets/fairs under the group banner.

• Maria shared experience of weekly market at Rex bar in Obidos, good for the experience of taking part, meeting other artists, and getting tips. Maria mentioned Citrus café as potential exhibition space.

• Annie advised artists to be clear about where their art is suitable for in terms of size, price, customer, across range of market/fair/exhibition/gallery, as markets and fairs usually mean lower price range.

• Claudia suggested we investigate Tasquinhas and other local festivals.

• Domi suggested we check out the new Vegan restaurant in Caldas which exhibits art.

 • Bruce suggested we check out Centro Cultural Caldas da Rainha for exhibition space, Toa Toa cafe in Foz do Arelho, and encourage young people to join the group.

 • Kim suggested we rent a space in Caldas, costs to be shared among interested artists where each can exhibit their art and take turns in running the gallery/shop.

• Erwin advised there are spaces still available for the Trilho Exhibition on Sunday September 11th and submissions of interest can be made to Erwin or Eugenia.

4. Roles

• Everyone was encouraged to seek out venues and once details agreed, team roles/tasks can be shared among participants and with one exhibition coordinator.

• Meetings to be held monthly with smaller more frequent meetings as required for exhibitions.

• Maria advised that exhibition communications are done through WhatsApp group set up for specific exhibitions.

• Jan expressed interest in assisting/shadow coordinating exhibitions.

5. Other

• Dave will update the blog starting out and someone will volunteer to assist later – we currently have a Facebook group, Instagram, blog post and WhatsApp group. The blog has tabs where info on events, bios, art shops, etc., will be recorded: https://accdrteam.blogspot.com/ for members and https://artistsclubcaldasdarainha.blogspot.com/ for public.

 • Dave asked everyone to send their details/bio to the WhatsApp group for upload to the ‘members’ area of the blog and to bring their business/artist cards to the next meetup.

• Nel suggested as part of bio, we pose questions for each person for uniformity.

• Dave suggested we enquire if funding is available for running collective exhibitions/projects.

• Dave asked if people had tips for online selling that could be shared with the group.
